All Day Field Trip to Niagara Falls Pfeiffer Nature Center Field Trip to Niagara Falls and the Niagara Gorge Thursday, June 21st Departure Time: 7:30 am Return Time: 5:30 pm Pfeiffer Nature Center is sponsoring a field trip to Niagara Falls and the Niagara Gorge to examine this unique area with nature guide, Tim Baird. This field trip will involve a full day excursion via carpooling to lesser-known areas for viewing the falls and gorge. During the visit, we will explore the natural history of this region. Discussion will include the geology of the gorge and the influence of the Wisconsin Ice Sheet on the formation of the falls and gorge. The spectacular waterfalls of the Niagara River are not the only phenomenon worthy of examination in this region. Our visit will start above the falls at Goat Island and continue down river to the Niagara Escarpment. Along the way, we will plan on stops that will include Whirlpool State Park and Artpark in Lewiston, NY. We will make adjustments as we travel to accommodate for varying times and participants' interests. Walking will be fairly easy, but be sure to wear proper footwear such as sneakers or day hikers. Please bring your own lunch. The Nature Center will provide coolers with ice and water if refrigeration is needed. In the event of bad weather, a rain date has been set for Thursday, June 28th. Space in our car pool is limited so reserve your seat today! Details on carpool locations will be shared following registration. The reservation deadline is 4 pm Monday, June 18th. The fee is $20 per person which includes carpooling fees. Please register by 4 pm, Monday, June 18th. All Day Nature Journaling Nature Journaling Saturday, June 2nd Start Time: 10 am Program Length: 1 1/2 hrs. Pfeiffer Nature Center is where Science, Art, and Nature come together. Pfeiffer Nature Center is honored to have local wildlife artist Jennifer Miller, 2015/2016 Federal Duck Stamp Artist and Pfeiffer Nature Center volunteer with us to explore all three at once with nature drawing/journaling! Nature drawing is the act of going outdoors and recording one’s personal observations about nature (anything from a sweeping landscape to a tiny mushroom) though the use of drawings and notes. The end result is personal enjoyment, learning, and growth as an observer of the natural world. The goal is not making “perfect art”! Because of this, anyone can do and enjoy nature journaling, regardless of artistic skill. It has been proven that drawing observed objects (regardless of skill) generates greater memory responses in the brain. Jennifer will speak about the ideas behind nature journaling, demonstrate how to observe natural objects, and encourage the group to do some nature journaling on the spot! If you wish to participate, please bring a sketchbook, journal, or even a lined or unlined notepad, along with your favorite drawing tool (pencil, pen, etc). If you have it, a travel paint kit (such as watercolors) is welcome but not required. Supplies will not be provided; please bring your own. No special supplies are needed beyond paper and pencil; after all, the end result is not “fine art”! This is an outdoor event, so please dress appropriately. This event will be held at: Pfeiffer Nature Center, Lillibridge Preserve, 1974 Lillibridge Road, Portville, NY 14770. Fee: $10 for non-members, $5 for members. Children under 14 are free. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Please register by 4 pm, Thursday, May 31st, 2018. Sign up on the Programs Calendar on our website at www.pfeiffernaturecenter.org or contact the office at 716-933-0187. . Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way Funding.
